When an own flaking line makes sense for a dairy operation, how the daily grain requirement is calculated from the ration, and what a make-or-buy comparison must include.
For a dairy operation the question is rarely the machine; it is whether the daily grain volume justifies processing on site instead of buying processed flakes. That comparison starts with your own ration figures, not with animal numbers alone.
Start from the grain, not the herd
Multiply the number of animals actually receiving flaked grain by the kilograms of that grain per animal per day. Only the grain to be flaked counts; the rest of the ration is irrelevant to plant sizing. If your figure is on a dry matter basis, convert it to as-fed mass before sizing anything.
A make-or-buy comparison must include
- Purchased flake cost delivered, at the same moisture and quality
- Your own processing cost per tonne: energy, steam, labour, maintenance
- Annual fixed costs that are not in the unit cost
- Total installed investment, not just the machine price
- What happens to the flakes: direct feeding or storage, which decides whether drying and cooling are needed
